What's the
deal with this new company?
So here is the full scoop. The
founder of Motosportz (Kelly Anson) is a hard core off roader
and has been continuously for 31 years.
"I got started in this
sport in 6th grade when my dad bought a XL175 and I had a
SL125 and we hit the trails in the Oregon coast range. I was
hooked the first day we went, the scenery, the bonding with
dad, the cool places we went. I'm sure this same story has
been played over and over in many households and I am so glad
I was fortunate enough to be blessed with a great family that
wanted to do fun stuff like this."
Many years go by and Kelly
never lost interest. Trail riding every weekend with friends
turned to racing local events and then more serious events.
"I started out trail
riding, then turned to poker runs and then to real off road
racing. I like long hard technical races so I preferred the
ISDE and GP type stuff as well as the 6, 12 and 24 hours type
team formats. Never really took racing real serious as in
tried to win a series but always enjoyed racing and still do.
I try to make it to the grueling Idaho City ISDE qualifier
every year as that is such a great event and LOTS of
miles."
Kelly worked in the high tech
field doing CAD (Computer Aided Design) for Intel, Nikes PGE
and others. After branching out and running his own semi
successful company in the same field the opportunity to work
in the motorsports industry presented itself when long time
ride partner Josh Paris and owner of Fastway Performance had
an opening for a CAD / design guy. Kelly worked doing CAD
design and for the Mountainspeed line of down hill mountain
bike MRP chain guides and the developed many of the current
Fastway Performance products. Kelly was instrumental in the
development of the current F3/F4 Fastway footpegs
incorporating the removable / adjustable collar feature. Kelly
also designed the Fastway FIT handguard system with sliding
damper mount which was honored with Dirtbike product of the
year.
"I really enjoyed my
employment at Fastway, learned a lot of things about the
industry and had a chance to design cool stuff I was really
into."
Fastway / Mountainspeed was
changing directions, sold off Mountainspeed and had some
personnel changes. This led Kelly to go his own direction and
to him starting and running Rooster Performance.
"Rooster was a good
challenge as a completely clean sheet start and all that it
takes to get a company off the ground."
After building Rooster from
scratch and running it in all aspects for two years Kelly
passed it off to his right hand man Scott and moved on to
something more high end and something he could really get his
mind into.
"Running Rooster was my
second ground up company and it was a lot of work. As is was a
partnership controlled by other parties I felt limited in my
ability to expand in the directions I wanted to. This lead me
to once again strike out on my own."
This time Kelly did just that,
invested his own money in something he felt very positive
about.
"I have used almost every
damper made. I believe in the idea and with all my experience
using dampers and background in design I wanted to take all my
accumulated information and apply it to what I feel is the
best damper on the market for many reasons. I worked with a UK
damper manufacturer for a bit and got a lot of insight as to
different design philosophies, different approaches to the
idea and different ways to slice the pie. Extensive use of all
the major damper manufacturers products compiled a list of
things I liked and did not like about the different offerings.
This ended in concise idea of what I wanted as and end result
and product."
and so it goes...
"After meeting Leigh
(machinist extraordinaire) and seeing his capabilities and
machining tolerances I knew we were going to do big things.
Leigh and I have been working together for a long time now and
the relationship is key to making this product all it can be.
Not only can Leigh keep ridiculous tolerances (.0001) but he
also has the ability to makes stuff nearly instantly. This has
led to being able to be extremely nimble an allow ideas to
flow effortlessly. This relationship has been key in the
design of this latest damper offering. After building the
first few test units incorporating all the design criteria we
establish we knew we were onto something very good. After
letting some local pros run it and getting very positive
feedback I felt even more on target"
